Mao then, Mao then…

I arrive into work this morning and what’s sitting on the desk? In all it’s glorious kitschness? Sport Damo’s present to me from his recent Chinese holiday. He’s always been very fair in humouring my weirdnesses when he’s been away (a fair few foreign language Harry Potter editions are testament to that) but just as he went away he asked me what I’d like.

“Something with communist iconography, you know the sort of crap I’m into” Says I. See I have a collection of Soviet badges on my man bag that I cart into work every day. This kind of thing.

Crap regime but great at the old iconography (as most heinous regimes are).

So, this morning what was awaiting me on the desk? That’s right. Chairman Mao playing cards.

Oh yeah baby!!!!! They include the Chairman Mao action figures…

The Chairman Mao chamberpot…

Chairman Mao shooting capitalists…

Chairman Mao in his robe…

Chairman Mao and “foreign friend”. Seriously.

Chairman Mao on the radio….

And Chairman Mao on the beach…

Best. Present. Ever.

  1. My Junior Cert history teacher in secondary school used to go to Russia all the time and brought back loads of military badges that he gave out to his best students.

Still have loads of them… mementos of a bygone era, I guess.
