The next Tony Fenton…

Right so.

A few bits worth mentioning from the show this week:

Wednesday we’re outside the Music Factory in Carlow for the afternoon before the first night of the RTE 2FM 2moro Tour; being headlined this time round by Messiah J & The Expert, Giveamanakick and The Flaws

Thursday we’re announcing a brand new comedy festival in Dublin from the Roadcaster on St. Stephen’s Green and then Thursday night after 7 I’m on the Fanning Show on Radio 1 for the first time ever, talking about The Simpsons.

To give complete credit where it’s due I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if it weren’t for Dave. He had me on first a few years back doing contributor stuff when no-one thought I was capable of it (actually, responsability for that falls to Jim Lockhart, who still produces Dave to this day, and Joan Torsney who now produces me!)

That led to people in the building thinking of me in a different way and then, after having created the template for evening talk a few years back, he moved on to a new gig and I slipped in and inherited all the best people on his show ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s weird but because of the way I came up in this business and how I accidentally stumbled into pop music radio in Atlantic 252, people always presumed that was who I was, not realising the lifelong, obsessive, hardened music lover within. A friend once joked to me that 2FM had hired me thinking they were getting the next Tony Fenton but instead they got someone who wanted to be the next Dave Fanning. They weren’t far off ๐Ÿ™‚

Things didn’t work out quite that way but since when does anything ever work out to plan particularly in this business?
