Be Careful What You Wish For…

I’m totally aware that this post is going to make me read like the most ungrateful gobshite in the history of blogging but nonetheless I plough on as usual…. 🙂

Today is no different to most other Sunday evenings – me, my pc, my mini-stereo system and a pile of cds at least as tall as the distance from the tip of my finger to my elbow (one old fashioned cubit for our ancient Egyptian readers!) I pile my way through them as usual and a thought starts to creep into my head:

How much of the last 4 years have I spent here listening to total and utter cannon fodder?

Songs so bad they should never have been sung out loud, let alone consigned to disc and foisted on an unsuspecting public. And no, I’m not talking about the back catalogue of Westlife or Celine Dion (easy targets but hey – when the cap fits…)

If I take it that 80% of everything is crap and that I spend an average of 2 hours a week listening to new music, multiply that by 48 weeks a year for the last 4 years and I end up with……. 12.8 days. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be actually…

Yeah, I know that many people would gladly take that for the flipside of being sent almost every new single and album release weeks in advance of them going on release and I suppose I do too but would it be asking too much that not every new dance tune is a rip off of an 80s classic, every new rock band sounds like The Strokes, every new pop act like….. well like every other new pop act?

I suppose it only makes the likes of us appreciate the truly brilliant bands all the more…

And to be fair you guys have to listen to radio that jams playlists that are mostly 80% crap on you every day anyway.

Songs that must be stabbed, hung, drawn, quartered, burned and have their ashes spread over a landfill circled by hungry disease ridden vultures:
