Beauty, Mullets, Escalators, Scumbags…

A few other thoughts for the day before I go off and live my life for the weekend only to blog it for you here later…

Out in Sandycove yesterday morning, it was so, so beautiful. Hard to believe that I’ve never been there before given that I spend so much time in Dun Laoghaire…. Loads of people swimming in the Forty Foot even given the almost subzero temperatures! Yeah, it looks like the sort of thing I’d like to try 🙂

A few things disturbing me today…

(1) Mullets. Girls have started wearing them. I passed 6 or 7 early twentysomething girls today all with the most atrocious haircuts that they think are intensely fashionable. Maybe this is the genesis?

I went over to Austria last year and all the girls were wearing mullets. The fashion must have spread. From Eoghan in galway

(2) Travelators. I’ve seen the equally disturbing trend recently of people pushing their way past people on travelators and escalators. I remember the first time I went to London as an adult and being barged past because I didn’t realise there was a side of the escalator to stand on in the tube if you weren’t running up! Was bowled over by quite an older man today who muttered something about being “under pressure” before whizzing past… Are we in that much of a hurry…?

(3) Tabloids. In the last few days thay’ve staked out Ryan Tubridy’s house in the bushes and tried to get into Miriam O’Callaghan’s maternity room. I genuinely thought we wouldn’t tolerate the kind of guff here that goes on in the UK on a daily basis in this country.

I’ve always believed that celebrities, like all of us, deserve their private lives to be very private if they wish particularly at intensely private times like the birth of a child or the break-up of a marriage. They are human just like the rest of us. I hate to think of a “race to the bottom” in this kind of coverage here. We’ve always had a particularly relaxed and adult attitude towards “famous” people here… I can’t believe this is going to start happening…

Ach…

Rants over for the while…

A final thought – really, really enjoyed The Podge & Rodge Show that started this week. The boys do their own chat show thing in their own style and it all comes off perfectly 🙂
