Live Events With Cecelia Ahern And Hannah Kent

Posted

Seems to make sense to put both of these together as they happened in fairly quick succession. Thanks *so* much to everyone who came out to our first Cork event, to Waterstones for agreeing so quickly and to Cecelia herself for making the trip up and down. She was warm, giving, thoughtful and told a few tales that weren’t for the internet 🙂 Hannah Kent pulled probably the biggest single author crowd we’ve had for a Dubray event in Dublin and she didn’t disappoint. She was incredibly smart, very passionate, spoke at length about Burial Rites and her new book […]

ROSBC Books Of The Month – February

Posted

This month, two different books, both coming hugely recommended from me and both with their own love it/hate it reviews in already… Sarah Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes is the real deal. I’m telling you nothing shy of it starting as a fairly conventional love triangle. Girl meets man in bar, they hit it off, turns out he’s her new boss and then girl meets the bosses wife and becomes her friend! I know that might sound a bit soap-operaesque but then the whole venture takes a sharp right hand turn and it all becomes genuinely compelling after that. I was […]

The Ali Land Event

Posted

Wasn’t she brilliant? Only her second ever public event with a book that has been sold in 22 countries (so she might have a few more to come), she was such a pro, and we had a huge crowd for a January, half of whom hadn’t even read the book yet! (Thanks to everyone whose pics I stole from Twitter!) Then we headed over for a blind book swap and a beer or two… We trended too… Leading to this 🙂 A fine, fine evening in all. Our next two are with Cecelia Ahern in Cork and Hannah Kent in […]

Short Book Reviews – January 2017

Posted

It’s been far too long and a combination of laziness and the season that shall not speak its name getting in the way but here are a few short reviews of things I’ve read over the last couple of months.   Colin Grant – A Smell Of Burning I realise this might be of minority interest if, unlike me, you haven’t spent your whole adult life with epilepsy being front and centre, but bear with me. It’s part thorough history of the condition, part look into what it actually is and how it works and part movingly human story about […]

If They’re Dividing Up Savoy One

Posted

Was told yesterday by someone in the know that the glorious Savoy 1, the largest cinema screen left in the country, is being closed and subdivided into smaller screens. Trying to confirm with them, they’ve been a bit evasive on Twitter, but if it’s true it will be a sad day in the history of Irish cinema-going. The screen that held almost 2,500 in the 1920s, holds 800 today with still that glorious giant set of red curtains that peel open before the film starts, and has been the location of pretty much every Irish movie premiere for decades will […]
